About the Author
Shelby Somers is a thirty-something-year-old poet and writer living in the heart of the United States. Drawing from her own life experience and love of fantasy, she writes with passion and imagination. She began writing poetry at sixteen, then, over a decade later, she found that writing was a gentle exercise to process her own story and find healing. For years, she felt silenced, and as though she didn’t have a voice, writing has allowed her to express what she cannot always find the words to say out loud. She writes not only for herself but for other survivors of abuse and long-term trauma. Taking inspiration from her faith and spiritual life with Christ, the beauty of nature, and her love of music, she paints a picture with each poem she writes. With the hope of helping others not feel so alone, she shares pieces of her story, the way so many others have shared theirs with her. “Reclaiming the Whitespace” is a collection of writing that is one woman’s journey to reclaim the artistic freedom and other parts of herself that have long been repressed and finally be able to articulate the narrative of her own life.
